Short story collections are often a mixed bag, but, while I did like some stories more than others, on the whole Bradbury delivers with his usually charming, but not purple, prose. I cannot begin to say how wrong the people are who think that Ray Bradbury doesn’t count, that he is for some period where we believed in things that we don’t any more.

They read about rocket ships and encounters in space, tales of dinosaurs.

The stories on the surface seem so far fetched, yet underneath there are beautiful layers to peel back and think on. In any event, here I am, eighty years old, feeling no different, full of a great sense of joy, and glad for the long life that has been allowed me.

Especially the story The Meadow is very beautiful when put in context, and als Bradbury is truly a master of the short story and it is always a pleasure to read them. It lay across the land, covering each mile like a gentle, warm, and humming blanket. Every tale in this book has a deeper meaning, something to say about the human condition, soul. She glowed and pulsed and was gentled in the great easy fabric. In an attempt to salvage their history and culture, a group of rebels memorize entire works of literature and philosophy as their books are burned by the totalitarian state.

It also helps that this collection starts off with a very Lovecraftian story titled The Fog. There is, however, very little by way of genuine chaff here, and Bradbury completists will want to seek out this volume for its inclusion of three stories not collected in the later editions alluded to above.

This one is a classic – a man steps on a butterfly in prehistoric times and this changes life in the present.
